Trump Thanks Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir for Pakistan’s Key Role in Gaza Ceasefire Agreement
Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt (October 13, 2025) — United States President Donald Trump on Monday expressed “special thanks” to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and “my favourite, Field Marshal Asim Munir” for their pivotal roles in achieving a long-awaited peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, ending two years of deadly conflict in Gaza.
Speaking at the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit for Peace, where the landmark ceasefire agreement was signed, President Trump praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts and invited Prime Minister Shehbaz to address the gathering.
Taking the podium, PM Shehbaz Sharif lauded President Trump’s leadership, calling the accord “one of the greatest days in contemporary history.” He went on to describe Trump as “a man of peace who has tirelessly worked to make this world a better and safer place.”
“Pakistan had earlier nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to stop the war between India and Pakistan,” PM Shehbaz said. “Today, I once again nominate him for his extraordinary contributions to ending the Gaza conflict and saving millions of lives.”
Trump, visibly moved, quipped humorously after the prime minister’s speech: “Wow! I didn’t expect that. Let’s go home — there’s nothing more I have to say. That was really beautiful.”
Pakistan’s Role in Peace Mediation
PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering diplomatic and moral support for the Palestinian cause, emphasizing the need for “coordinated international efforts to restore peace and justice.” He thanked Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE for their mediation support alongside Egypt and the United States.
“Had President Trump not intervened during those critical four days, a nuclear escalation between India and Pakistan might have been inevitable,” Shehbaz remarked.
Meetings with Regional and Global Leaders
On the sidelines of the summit, the Pakistani premier met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who expressed gratitude for Islamabad’s “unwavering political and diplomatic support.”
PM Shehbaz also held bilateral meetings with world leaders including:
- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi
- King Abdullah II of Jordan
- King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain
- UN Secretary General António Guterres
- President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan
- Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia
- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz
- Italian PM Giorgia Meloni
- Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez
- Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto
- Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan
The premier described the peace deal as a “crucial step toward lasting peace in the Middle East.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he thanked Presidents Trump and El-Sisi for their “outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to end the genocide in Gaza.”
“This marks the closing of a genocidal chapter — one that the world must ensure is never repeated,” he wrote.
Summit Highlights
The Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, co-chaired by Trump and El-Sisi, brought together leaders from more than 20 countries, including the UK, France, Turkey, Italy, Spain, and Jordan. Israel and Hamas were not present at the summit but participated indirectly through Qatari and Egyptian mediators.
